The growing health problem of vitamin D deficiency is considered
a Silent Epidemic for a very good reason -- most people aren't aware it even exists.
And as research continues in this area of concern,
the list of diseases potentially caused by this epidemic continues to grow and grow.
eg-osteoporosis, osteomalacia (the adult form of rickets), some cancers, Alzheimer's disease
Multiple sclerosis, hypertension, TB, depression, diabetes, heart disease, flu and colds.
Records, thousands of years old, reveal how the sun was used to strengthen a person's health and treat a variety of illnesses and conditions. Conditions that are still concerns today, like:
Take cod liver oil as it helps protect from getting burnt
One important blood test everyone should get is Vitamin D. Even when living in a sunny climate, Vitamin D deficiency is very common. Vitamin D supplementation often resolves many health problems.
Make sure to take it with fat, as this helps your body to absorb it.
If you take too much D, you won't get enough magnesium.
You need to take D3, calcium citrate, and magnesium in the proper ratios. You need twice as much calcium as magnesium. How much you need of each varies according to sex and age.
Also, you won't absorb vitamin D if your thyroid is slow. Lots of things can cause the thyroid to be too slow.
For example, too much antihistamine or daily doses of antihistamine
taken over a long period of time or too much fluoride can slow down thyroid function.
Address thyroid issues in order to properly absorb vitamin D.

The 10 symptoms of vitamin D deficiency
1.) The flu - vitamin D deficiency predisposes children to respiratory diseases. -
vitamin D reduces the incidence of respiratory infections in children.
2.) Muscle weakness - because for skeletal muscles to function properly,
their vitamin D receptors must be sustained by vitamin D.
3.) Psoriasis - vitamin D analogues were found useful in the treatment of psoriasis.
4.) Chronic kidney disease - patients with advanced chronic kidney diseases (especially dialysis) are unable to make the active form of vit D. & need to take 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 or one of its calcemic analogues to support calcium metabolism, decrease the risk of renal bone disease and regulate parathyroid hormone levels.
5.) Diabetes - 10,366 children were given 2000 international units (IU)/day of vitamin D3 per day during their first day of life & were monitored for 31 years and in all, the risk of type 1 diabetes was reduced by 80 percent.
6.) Asthma - Vitamin D In Japan asthma attacks in school children were significantly lowered in those subjects taking a daily vitamin D supplement of 1200 IU a day.
7.) Periodontal disease - chronic gum disease, swelling, bleeding gums should raise vit D levels to produce defensins and cathelicidin, compounds that contain microbial properties and lower bacteria in mouth.
8.) Cardiovascular disease - Congestive heart failure is associated with vitamin D deficiency. Research conducted at Harvard University among nurses found that women with low vitamin D levels (17 ng/m [42 nmol/L]) had a 67 percent increased risk of developing hypertension.
9.) Schizophrenia and Depression - maintaining sufficient vitamin D among pregnant women and during childhood was necessary to satisfy the vitamin D receptor in the brain integral for brain development and mental function maintenance in later life.
10.) Cancer - connection between high vitamin D and reduced risk of breast cancer. - increased doses of the sunshine vitamin linked to 75 percent reduction in cancer growth and 50 percent reduction in tumor cases .-vitamin supplementation helped control development & growth of breast cancer specially estrogen-sensitive breast cancer.

It is important for everyone to understand that the dangers of sun exposure
have been greatly exaggerated and the benefits of sun exposure greatly underestimated.
God designed the human body to receive daily exposure to the sun’s rays for numerous reasons.
One of the most important is that the sun provides the building materials
our bodies need to produce Vitamin D, one of the most basic
and important elements humans require in order to regain or maintain health.
If you still believe the sun’s rays are dangerous, it is imperative that you re-evaluate your thinking.
If you continue to hold incorrect negative beliefs about the sun
and continue to refrain from allowing its rays to fall upon your body and nourish it,
you could easily bring your life to an early end or needlessly experience numerous physical problems…

that sun exposure without burning actually decreases the potential of melanoma.

Insufficient exposure to ultraviolet radiation may be an important risk factor
for cancer in Western Europe and North America,
according to a new study published in the prominent Cancer journal
that directly contradicts official advice about sunlight.
The research examined cancer mortality in the United States.
Deaths from a range of cancers of the reproductive and digestive systems
were approximately twice as high in New England as in the southwest,
despite a diet that varies little between regions.
An examination of 506 regions found a close inverse correlation between cancer mortality
and levels of ultraviolet B light.
The likeliest mechanism for a protective effect of sunlight is vitamin D,
which is synthesized by the body in the presence of ultraviolet B.
Cancer Journal, 94:1867-75 (emphasis mine)
Here’s what you need to know about this study:
Sunlight reduced the instance of some of the deadliest cancers, such as breast, colon and prostate.
In another study, clinical laboratory scientist Dennis Mangan concluded
“This is like the Holy Grail of cancer medicine; vitamin D produced a drop in cancer rates greater than that for quitting smoking, or indeed any other countermeasure in existence.“
But What About Melanoma and Other Skin Cancers?According to several studies
low vitamin D status may actually contribute to the development of melanoma and other cancers.
[P]atients with malignant melanoma exhibit low levels of vitamin D3 in their blood
[this study notes that the those who had the lowest levels developed metastatic disease faster],
and . . . others have a problem with the receptor for vitamin D. (Hutchinson et al. 2000; Green et al. 1983) The incidence of melanoma of the skin on sites of the body intermittently exposed to sunlight
is reduced among outdoor workers compared with indoor workers. (Elwood et al. 1985)
All of this points to a protective role for vitamin D against cancer in general, and melanoma in particular.
But the final nail in the coffin of the “sunlight causes melanoma” hypothesis is this:
A comprehensive review of research studies from 1966 through 2003 failed to show any association between melanoma and sunscreen use!(Dennis et al. 2003)
Say what? Sunscreen doesn’t prevent skin cancer, that’s what.
The main chemical used in sun lotions to filter out ultraviolet light may be TOXIC,
particularly when exposed to sunshine.¹
Now, I’m not saying that sunscreen is directly responsible
for the development of melanoma or any other particular cancers,
but the slew of chemicals it contains have been shown to contribute to cancer.
These chemicals don’t sit simply coat our skins, says clinical laboratory scientist Elizabeth Plourde.
“Sunscreen is detected in the blood in five minutes and within hours
it’s detected in the liver, kidneys, spleen, testicles and the brain.
So we absorb it and it’s going into all our organs.”
And what do we have to show for it?
In the last 40 years sunscreen use has increased by 30%,
but at the same time skin cancer rates nearly quadrupled in parts of our population?
“[If] sunscreen is meant to protect us, with its astounding popularity,
one would think the skin cancer rates would at least stabilize, if not decrease,” right? ²

Chemical Sunscreens Can Be Really Scary . . .
Most of the active chemical ingredients contain potent endocrine disruptors,
and experts believe exposure to them is changing us for the worse.
Many “healthy” mineral sunscreens contain nanoparticles
which have been linked to accelerated skin aging, cancer and environmental toxicity.
Not to mention that many of them use omega-6 rich oils such as soy and sunflower/safflower,
which may disturb the healthy balance of fats most likely to resist oxidation.
Most days we skip sunscreen altogether and use antioxidants instead,
but on days we are going to be out much longer than usual we do use sunscreen.
Based on all the scary stuff I just mentioned you may be asking if there are ANYsunscreens I’d recommend.
Thanks to this sunscreen review by Katie over at Kitchen Stewardship,
the answer is yes! Most days I skip the sunscreen and let antioxidants do the work,
but for long days at the beach Kabana Organic Skincare offers
a zinc-based, non-nanoparticle, non-micronized sunscreen with eight great ingredients!
Okay, right now it does have a teeny bit of soy in it,
but they’re adding a new formula with beeswax instead by mid-summer.
Now the thing I love about this sunscreen is that – unlike many of the “non-nano” sunscreens out there –
this one in non- micronized as well. (Note: This is the only one sold by Kabana specifically non-micronized)
Where to buy my top sunscreen pick
Loving Naturals also has a pretty good one.
They actually list the micron size of their zinc oxide – it’s within range of normal particles
so I’m guessing it’s not micronized.
The only thing I’d change is switch out the omega-6 rich sunflower oil for something else.
Not a huge deal to me, though. And yay! They have a baby version, too!
