"Happiness is to be found along the way,
not at the end of the road,
for then the journey is over
and it is too late.
Today, this hour,
this minute is the day,
the hour, the minute
for each of us to sense
the fact that life is good,
with all of its trials and troubles,
and perhaps more interesting
because of them."

MOOD ENHANCING FOODS - Increase Magnesium (eat pepitas/pumpkin seeds)
Ever wondered if there was something you could eat that would make you feel a bit more happy!
Silverbeet  is packed with magnesium,
a nutrient essential for the biochemical reactions in the brain that boost your energy levels.
According to Dr. Ramsey, some of the first studies on magnesium involved its effect on depression.
The majority of westerners don't get enough magnesium in their diet.
Green-thumb tip: Silverbeet/swiss chard is easy to grow in a home garden. If you plant it, harvest just a few outer leaves—not everything all at once—and the plant will continue producing all season long.

1. Eat kelp, halibut, mackerel, cocoa, wheat germ, leafy greens, nuts and seeds/pepitas
2. Spray on a Magnesium oil
3. Apply a Magnesium butter/lotion here.
 4) Swim in the ocean
5. Have Epsom salt baths or magnesium flake baths
Make sure to use a chlorine bath ball to filter chlorine from your bath.
If you don’t have a chlorine filter you can add bentonite clay into your bath water.
The bentonite clay will help to absorb a lot of the chlorine in the water.

Dark natural Choc
provides an instant boost in concentration and mood and even improves blood flow to the brain,
helping you feel more vibrant and energized.
Skip the sugary milk chocolate blends and go directly for the darkest organic (highest percentage of cocoa) dairy free chocolate you can. Or make your own raw.
A recent study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology
found that just a 50 grams of dark chocolate a day results in better mood.

Lift spirits with asparagus...
This vegetable is one of the top plant-based sources of tryptophan, which serves as a basis for the creation of serotonin, one of the brain's primary mood-regulating neurotransmitters.
High levels of folate also add to asparagus's happiness-promoting profile;
research has shown that up to 50 percent of people with depression suffer from low folate levels.
Like tryptophan, it's a necessary factor for creating neurotransmitters.

Cherry Tomatoes...
All tomatoes are a great source of lycopene, a fat-soluble phytonutrient that helps protect vital brain fat,
and a nutrient that actually stops the buildup of pro-inflammatory compounds linked to depression.
Because lycopene lives in tomato skins, the best way to get it is through cherry tomatoes,
whose smaller surface area means you'll eat more skin than if you eat a full-size tomato, explains Dr. Ramsey.
To maximize the amount of lycopene your body absorbs, drizzle some olive oil over the tomatoes, and enjoy!
Just be sure to always choose organic. Trials at University of California–
Davis have found that organic tomatoes have higher lycopene levels.

7 Strategies for beating Depression
Thehealthyhomeeconomist.com/depression-your-brain-on-sugar
Did You Know . . .
That antidepressants only have about a 13% effectiveness rate? (1)
That’s just a smidge better than a placebo!
Considering that they may cause homicidal tendencies
I believe it’s time we rethink our approach.
Depression is REAL,
and it deserves to be taken seriously.
Avoiding the devastating effects [from sugar] of glycation
upon the brain which can over the long haul,
because mental illness like depression,
anxiety and other mood disorders requires stable,
steady blood sugar as much as possible.

Fats You MUST Have in Your Kitchen.
For more details on the healthiest fats to consume
and the ones you absolutely can’t do without
if you want peak mental fitness, please see the article
How much of the brain under healthy, normal circumstaces
is actually composed of highly processed, polyunsaturated fats
which are the primary fat in the Western diet?
How about none!
If you want to adopt the wise and time tested strategy, of eating properly for your brain’s sake,
then you must eat the type of fats
that actually comprise the make-up of the brain.
Doesn’t this just make sense?
  • Coconuts, coconut oil and coconut milk
    • Extra virgin olive oil
    • Avocados
    • Organic eggs -esp yolks from cage-free birds
    • Soaked nuts and seeds (about a handful per day )
    • Cold-water fish and high quality fish oils
    • Bone broths
    • Organic Butter, Cream. Ghee ( if you are not allergic to dairy)
      Tallow/Suet/Lard

These fats are the ones to consume if you wish to put depression behind you for good.
Stop the sugar!  Eat good fats. Save your brain .. and possibly even your life!

click for ~ What to Do If You Wake Up Feeling Fragile
Knowing who we are in God, gives us a purpose for living-
from a young age, I needed to know God, His love for me, His care for me,
I wanted to know fulfillment, security and an eternal heaven.
It is only by knowing The Lord Jesus cleanses our restless, fighting spirit-
and will live within to carry us to heaven,-
can we feel safe, with nothing to fear.

“This life is ours. but it can only be truly free, if we are free from self, from troubled thoughts.
The Lord Jesus died to save us from self and it's burdens/sadness and fear.
If we realise we need Him and that He died for 'ME'- my need/my inability to think and do right-.
and give ourselves to HIM<
then His holy/perfect Spirit indwells our spirit and makes us new.
Our soul is still imperfect, so our soul we need to submit to him each day/moment,
to let Him be in control,
for our control is based on circumstance,
where-as His control is based on permanent peace.
God has the power to give us the ability to choose what we need to do and do it well.
When we accept Him and His power He will give us His love -
to love and love honestly.
Then we can live in His joy, walk in His gardens, His flowers, His forest -
and enjoy all He made.
We can live in His power to control emotions, feelings, memories, hurts.
No one else can do it for us, only God has that love and power..
We can live in His power and love- then each day is then lived in a settled contentment.”
Once we cease the fighting-
Perfect trust in God miraculously changes us, and we know His peace and fulfillment.

Personality type also affects levels of depression-
the artistic, musical, creative, emotional type personalities
are more prone to feeling sadness, loneliness, grief.
It is wise:
 To keep busy creating, learning, giving;
 To enjoy all God made, animals, cute things, mountains, forest, sunsets, sunrises, gardens;
To think beautiful, kind thoughts;
To believe, trust that God is in control,
To keep thankful -very strengthening, it is a sacrifice, so doesn't come naturally,
but God does miraculously bless our spirit if we praise Him.
AND the biggest uplift 'man' has is in helping others.
Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise--
the fruit of lips that confess his name.
And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

Digestive health is a major cause of feeling miserable, eg
if there is flatulence or acidic/sugar overbalance, depression is much more likely,
Eat no more than 30% acidic foods, ie meat, grain, dairy, berries.

tip - Find a Dr who can help balance missing nutrients
and eliminate toxins and heavy metals- for they can lodge in the brain.

Five things to help our minds and bodies heal.

# 1. Eat food as God made it
Food is much more powerful than pills. Our bodies are brilliant chemists.
God made our bodies to know exactly what to do with food
in order to synthesize it into the perfect form for our needs.
Unfortunately, they are not alchemists.
They can’t turn trans-fats into brain building omega-3 goodness.
In the case of people with “unexplained” depression
(depression not connected with painful events or stressful circumstances),
the root cause is often nutrient deficiencies.
Mommypotamus.com/what-the-vitamin-industry-does-not-want-you-to-know

#2. Replace 'cheer me up' comfort bad foods
with foods that build the body.
Certain foods – especially sugar, grains, and any processed food-
can have drug-like effects that worsen depression.
According to Dr. Mercola, “processed foods also contain a variety of additives
that can affect your brain function and mental state, especially MSG,
and artificial sweeteners such as aspartame.
There’s a great book on this subject, 'The Sugar Blues'
written by William Dufty more than 30 years ago,
that delves into the topic of sugar and mental health in great detail.
#3. TLC for the body -
Go for a walk or bike ride, enjoy the sun, listen to birds, enjoy music.
Learn to laugh, swing or find a way to exercise that’s fun.
Get a massage (yes, you!). Restore balance to your day.
Exhale tension by talking with God and meditating on His goodness and Creation.
#4.Enjoy the outdoors
Have a rest on the lawn, wear barefeet,
there's restfullness and goodness walking on God's ground.
#5. Do something creative
Find things to develop your God given gifts, that will bring Him glory and fulfill your calling.
Pray ask God to develop and use your gifts expressly to bring Him glory and bring you joy and fulfillment
After my children finished school, I asked God what now.
He gave me poetry, like a river flowing from within.
#6. Probiotics [yes them again]
Probiotics are absolutely essential because they help us absorb nutrients from other foods.
(intestinal inflammation has been linked to depression).
A Probiotic capsule daily before bed is one of the few vital supplements needed in addition to eating
 fermented foods like
1. pickled peppers
 2. carrot dilly sticks.
3. how-to-soak-and-dehydrate-nuts-the-nourishing-traditions-way
Kefir
Probiotic Capsules,  (where to buy probiotic supplements)
TIP stir 3 capsules into thick warm coconut milk/cream and sit in warm place for 8-10 hours.

#7. Sleep
Sleep deprivation is strongly implicated in depression,
so consider winding down your evenings early with a cup of chamomile tea
Read now for a better sleep tonight.
 1. Sleep
2. Sleep Mistakes That Can Ruin Your Night...
Wait! Don't reach for a sleeping pill!
Check out these common mistakes, and strike them from your life,
and you may find your issues resolve themselves.
Plus special notes on the migraine-sleep connection, and sleep apnea-dementia connection.

Mommypotamus.com/5-natural-remedies-for-depression
more on #6 Your gut actually produces more of the neurotransmitter serotonin—
in addition to having a beneficial influence on your mood in general--
than your brain does,
so optimizing your gut flora may indeed have tremendous benefit
 for your psychological health.
And there's plenty of evidence to suggest that this needs to begin from birth,
 or even, ideally, before birth.

Increasingly, scientific evidence shows that nourishing your gut flora
with the beneficial bacteria found in traditionally fermented foods
(or a probiotic supplement) is extremely important for proper brain function,
and that includes psychological well-being and mood control.

By eating fermented foods-you consume more than 100 times the amount, than in oral probiotics.
You can get many trillions of bacteria instead of billions.

2. Treating Depression Naturally:
Supplements, Herbs and Foods for Feeling Better
Mommypotamus.com/5-natural-remedies-for-depression
More on remedy #1: Eat. Good. Food.
When someone is depressed, what does the psychiatrist do? Give them a pill.
Where does it go? In their gut.
We’re well aware of the power of something we put in our bodies to effect our state of mind,
but do most of us realize the potential of food to function this way?
Because it absolutely does.
What we eat shapes how we experience the world in a profound way.
When it comes to treating depression I believe food is much more powerful than pills.
The body’s internal chemist simply don’t have all the materials it needs to synthesize “feel good” chemicals.
Even people eating a good diet can experience a rapid depletion
of vitamins B, C and E as well as magnesium and potassium in times of intense stress or illness.

Which Deficiencies Are Associated With Depression?
The best book on depression and food I’ve seen is Rebuild from Depression, by Amanda Rose,
who understands the condition from bitter experience. ~ Nina Planck, Author of Real Food

For a more methodical approach Rebuild From Depression can teach you to identify a nutrient deficiency,
locate the best supplements / vitamins available,
and select and prepare foods to maximize those nutrients in their diets.

  • Vitamin D: Called the “sunshine vitamin,” Vitamin D is actually more accurately classified as a hormone. A study “among the elderly in 2006 showed that those with lower Vitamin D levels were 11 times more likely to exhibit depressive symptoms.” (2) Absorption rates are much higher when our bodies produce Vitamin D via time in the sun, but supplementation with lard from pastured pork (see ad above), cod liver oil and eggs also play a vital role in keeping levels where they should be.
  • Omega 3 fatty acids: Prozac “works” by increasing serotonin levels, but a much safer way to accomplish the same goal is through serotonin enhancing foods like wild caught salmon, sardines, anchovies and herring.
  •  Cod liver oil is also a good source. (buy cod liver oil) Studies have linked depression with low dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids. In countries with higher fish consumption, such as Japan and Taiwan, the depression rate is 10 times lower than in North American. Postpartum depression is also less common.”(3)
  • Note: Though it does not contain omega-3′s coconut oil is also a serotonin enhancing food. (4)
  • B-Complex Vitamins: Especially B-12, B-6 and folate (B-9). “B-complex vitamins are essential to mental and emotional well-being. They cannot be stored in our bodies, so we depend entirely on our daily diet to supply them. B vitamins are destroyed by alcohol, refined sugars, nicotine, and caffeine so it is no surprise that many people may be deficient in these.” (1). For a complete list of B-vitamins and what they do check out this article. Note though, that “folic acid” is actually a synthetic form of folate.
  • Good sources of B-vitamins are eggs, salmon and beef.
Update: Vitamin B3 may also be a significant factor. Please see this post and this one for more details.

  • Magnesium: “Deficiency can result in depressive symptoms, along with confusion, agitation, anxiety, and hallucinations, as well as a variety of physical problems. Most diets do not include enough magnesium
  •  [due to modern farming practices and water filtration] . . . stress also contributes to magnesium depletion “(5) Though I pretty much exclusively recommend magnesium oil over internal supplements this article from Cheeseslave is very informative. (She recommends magnesium oil too and even shows how to make it here.
  •  She just also recommends internal supplements  )
  • Vitamin C: Low levels can cause generalized depression, extreme tiredness and outbursts of hysterical behavior. Nearly all vitamin C supplements are synthetic and may cause kidney stones.
  • For natural sources try oranges, kiwi fruits, broccoli, blackcurrants and potatoes, red pepper, parsley, green leafy vegetables (especially kale), green pepper, tomato puree, brussels sprouts, cauliflower,
  • cabbage (especially savoy), strawberries, watercress, spinach, grapefruit, melon (all types),
  • peas, raspberries, spring onions, turnip and tomatoes. (6)
  • Calcium: “Depletion affects the central nervous system. Low levels of calcium cause nervousness, apprehension, irritability, and numbness.”(7) Homemade bone broth is an excellent source of calcium.
  • Zinc: “Inadequacies result in apathy, lack of appetite, and lethargy. When zinc is low, copper in the body can increase to toxic levels, resulting in paranoia and fearfulness.” (8)
  •  Liver, beef, scallops, sesame seeds and pumpkin seeds are all great sources of zinc.
  • Iron: “Depression is often a symptom of chronic iron deficiency. Other symptoms include general weakness, listlessness, exhaustion, lack of appetite, and headaches.”
  •  Caution: Iron deficiency often indicates that iron loving microbes (Actinomyces spp., Mycobacterium spp., pathogenic strains of E. coli, Corynebacterium spp., and many others) are living in the digestive tract and hogging all the goods. Increasing iron intake without balancing gut flora to contain more beneficial bacteria
  •  only causes the pathogenic ones to grow stronger. It does very little to help with anemia.
  • Manganese: “This metal is needed for proper use of the B-complex vitamins and vitamin C. Since it also plays a role in amino-acid formation, a deficiency may contribute to depression stemming from low levels of the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine. Manganese also helps stabilize blood sugar and prevent hypoglycemic mood swings.” (1)
  • Food sources are spelt, brown rice, spinach, pineapple and pumpkin seeds
  • Potassium: “Depletion is frequently associated with depression, tearfulness, weakness, and fatigue.” (9) Sources are swiss chard, lima beans, yams, spinach and lentils
  • Salt: According to Dr. Mercola, “Sodium deficiency actually creates symptoms that are very much like those of depression. Make sure you do NOT use processed salt (regular table salt), however.
  • Use all natural, unprocessed salt ie Celtic seasalt, Himalayan salt, - more than 80 different micronutrients.”
Wouldn’t it be easier to just close the nutritional gap with supplements?
Yes, it would! Unfortunately, most “whole food” based supplements are not what they seem,
so as much as possible I recommend sticking with actual food.
Besides, we’re talking about organic butter/ghee, nitrate free bacon and natural salt — not rice cakes!
Oh yes, a Weston A. Price style-diet should cover your nutritional bases.
However, if your depression is severe or you have other issues you’d like to deal with
(such as ADD, eczema, weight issues, anxiety and adrenal burnout)
I highly recommend looking into the Gut & Psychology Syndrom (GAPS) diet.

Having said that, I think quality herbs such as St. John’s Wort are helpful for some people –
just not folks that are pregnant, nursing, or taking other medications (the full breakdown of contraindications).

10 Resolutions for Mental Health
On October 22, 1976, Clyde Kilby, who is now with Christ in Heaven,
gave an unforgettable lecture. I went to hear him that night because I loved him.
When he spoke of the tree he saw on the way to class this morning,
you wondered why you had been so blind all your life.
Since those days in classes with Clyde Kilby,Psalm 19:1 has been central to my life:
“The sky is telling the glory of God.”

That night Dr. Kilby had a pastoral heart and a poet’s eye.
He pled with us to stop seeking mental health in the mirror of self-analysis,
but instead to drink in the remedies of God in nature.
He was not naïve. He knew of sin.
He knew of the necessity of redemption in Christ.
But he would have said that Christ purchased new eyes for us as well as new hearts.
His plea was that we stop being un-amazed by the strange glory of ordinary things
He ended that lecture in 1976 with a list of resolutions.
As a tribute to my teacher and a blessing to your soul, I offer them for your joy.

1. At least once every day I shall look steadily up at the sky and remember that I,
a consciousness with a conscience, am on a planet traveling in space
with wonderfully mysterious things above and about me.

2. Instead of the accustomed idea of a mindless and endless evolutionary change
to which we can neither add nor subtract, I shall suppose the universe guided by an Intelligence which,
as Aristotle said of drama, requires a beginning, a middle, and an end.
I think this will save me from cynicism.

3. I shall not fall into the falsehood that this day, or any day,
is merely another ambiguous and plodding twenty-four hours,
but rather a unique event, filled, if I so wish, with worthy potentialities.
I shall not be fool enough to suppose that trouble and pain
are wholly evil parentheses in my existence,
but just as likely ladders to be climbed toward moral and spiritual adulthood.

4. I shall not turn my life into a thin, straight line which prefers abstractions to reality.
I shall know what I am doing when I abstract, which of course I shall often have to do.

5. I shall not demean my own uniqueness by envy of others.
I shall stop boring into myself to discover what psychological or social categories I might belong to.
Mostly I shall simply forget about myself and do my work.

6. I shall open my eyes and ears. Once every day I shall simply stare
at a tree, a flower, a cloud, or a person.
I shall not then be concerned at all to ask what they are-  but simply be glad that they are.
I shall joyfully allow them the mystery of what Lewis calls - their "divine" existence.

7. I shall sometimes look back at the freshness of vision I had in childhood
and try, at least for a little while, to be, in the words of Lewis Carroll,
the "child of the pure unclouded brow, and dreaming eyes of wonder."

8. I shall turn frequently to imaginative things such as good literature and good music,
preferably, as Lewis suggests, an old book and timeless music.

9. I shall not allow the on-rush of this century to usurp all my energies
but will instead, as Charles Williams suggested, "fulfill the moment as the moment."
I shall try to live well just now because the only 'earthly' time that exists is now.

10. Today, this very day, some stroke is being added to the cosmic canvas
that in due course I shall understand with joy
as a stroke made by the architect who calls himself Alpha and Omega.

Note-Don't be lulled into thinking we transform by,
feeling better about ourselves, blanking past hurts,

playing new music in our mind or by eating organic foods.
We will not live forever by eating organic, our body will still age and die.
Just eating good food will not make us new in our soul and spirit,
nor make us forget past hurt.
Only God makes our hearts new/heals our broken heart.
We need to be IN the Lord Jesus, so our spirit is safe for eternity

We can only be suited to/fit in/enter heaven, IF The Lord Jesus lives in us -
to carry our spirit home.
Once we know God, He can give us the power to choose how to eat right,
so our body/mind receives the nutrition to function as He made it to.
